Rules & Regulations
- Closed seasons
- November to March: Northwest monsoon (less fishing possible). No formal closed seasons.
- Catch limits
- Bonefish: Catch-and-release mandatory. GT: Recommended. Food fish: Moderate limits.
- Prohibited methods
- Spearfishing with breathing apparatus prohibited. Nets prohibited. Marine Parks: No fishing!
- Catch & Release
- Standard for GT, bonefish and permit. Strictly enforced on the Outer Islands.
The Outer Islands (Alphonse, Cosmoledo, Astove) are the holy grail of GT fly fishing. Strict C&R rules protect the stocks.

- Outer Island Lodges provide equipment. Own 12wt fly rod for GT recommended.
- Fishing guides
- Outer Island Lodge: 800-1,500 USD/day (all-inclusive). Mahe charter: 400-800 USD/day.
- Transport
- Flight to Mahe. Small aircraft or boats to the Outer Islands. Long transfers!
- Safety
- Strong currents around the atolls. Sun protection vital. Sharks on the flats are normal.
- Customs & taking fish home
- Fishing equipment allowed. Do not export coral, shells or protected marine animals!
