Best water types

Reef fishing means working coral reefs, rocky bottom, and underwater wrecks for the structure-loving species that hold there. Depths range 10–60 meters typically, sometimes deeper. Targets include grouper (red, black, gag, scamp), snapper (mutton, yellowtail, mangrove, red), porgy, hogfish, amberjack, almaco jack, and barracuda — a mixed bag that keeps every drop interesting.

The day is anchor-and-fish or drift-and-jig. Anchor-fishing puts the boat over a known reef edge or wreck, then anglers drop weighted bottom rigs with cut bait (squid, ballyhoo, sardine) or live bait (pinfish, blue runner). Drift-fishing covers more ground — boat drifts with current, anglers work butterfly jigs or live baits in the strike zone.

Reef fishing is bite-rich. Even slow days produce dozens of fish, and the variety means kids and beginners stay engaged. The challenge is fighting structure: when a 15kg gag grouper hits, it dives for the rocks within seconds. Heavy drag, short rod, and quick reflexes are needed to turn the fish before it breaks off in the structure.

Classic reef destinations: Florida Keys, Bahamas, Caribbean (Cayman, Dominican Republic, Curaçao), Mediterranean (Croatia, Italy, Greece, Turkey), Australia's Great Barrier Reef, the Maldives, the Seychelles, the Red Sea (Egypt, Sudan).

Safety & regulations

Coral cuts heal slowly — wear shoes, gloves when handling fish near reef. Sharp dorsal spines on hogfish and groupers. Currents over reef edges can be strong. Reef hooks and short leaders to break free if hung up. Many species have strict size + season limits (e.g., Florida grouper closures, Bahamas Nassau grouper protection).
