Fishing License & Permit
- License required?
- Yes
- Where to apply?
- New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife (NJDEP). Online via the NJ Fish & Wildlife portal, at license agents (bait shops, sporting-goods stores), or by phone.
- Cost
- Resident freshwater annual: $22.50. Non-resident freshwater annual: $34.00. Trout stamp (required for trout): $10.50 resident / $20 non-res. Saltwater: free — register with the NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry (SRRP). Seniors 70+ fish free.
- Validity
- Annual (date of purchase through December 31) — freshwater. SRRP saltwater registration is annual and free.
- Available online?
- Yes
New Jersey uses a split system: freshwater is paid, saltwater is free via the mandatory Saltwater Recreational Registry (SRRP). The SRRP is required for anyone 16+ fishing marine waters with rod/line or handline — it replaces a paid license and feeds federal catch statistics. Freshwater license required at 16+; separate trout stamp needed to harvest or target trout. To qualify as an NJ resident you must have lived in-state for 6 consecutive months.

Rules & Regulations
- Closed seasons
- Trout: in-season closure on stocked waters late March pre-season (typically 5:00 a.m. opening day in early April). Striped bass: federal recreational closures apply; NJ bonus-tag program may add seasonal windows. Summer flounder (fluke): seasonal open window (May–Sept typical).
- Catch limits
- Striped bass: 1/day slot 28–31" (NJ bonus tag allows 1 additional 24–28" fish). Summer flounder (fluke): 3/day 18" min. Weakfish: 1/day 13" min. Largemouth bass: 5/day 12" min. Trout: 6/day (4 in-season on stocked).
- Prohibited methods
- No snagging game fish. No gaffing striped bass. Live-lining eels regulated for striper. Spearfishing prohibited for freshwater game fish.
- Catch & Release
- Required for striped bass outside slot, summer flounder under 18", and any trout over the daily creel. Encouraged for weakfish (stock rebuilding).
The Jersey Shore hosts one of the most intense striped bass migrations on the Atlantic coast (Sandy Hook, Barnegat Inlet, Cape May Rips). Delaware Bay is a weakfish stronghold. Freshwater trout program stocks ~570,000 trout annually across 200+ waters.
