Rules & Regulations
- Closed seasons
- Lake Ontario salmon tributaries: special regulations Sep–Dec. Trout opener: April 1 on most streams. Striped bass (marine): varies by year.
- Catch limits
- Lake Ontario Chinook: 3/day. Striped bass (marine): 1/day 28–31" slot (plus 1 over 31" in some windows). Smallmouth bass: 5/day 12" min. Lake trout: 2/day.
- Prohibited methods
- Snagging salmon in Lake Ontario tributaries prohibited. Lead sinkers under 1/2 oz banned on all waters (loon protection).
- Catch & Release
- Required for Atlantic salmon. Recommended for big stripers to protect breeding stock.
Marine Registry (free) required even for surf casters. Montauk and Captree Parks have dedicated charter fleets. Finger Lakes lake trout and landlocked salmon programs.
