Rules & Regulations

Closed seasons
Walleye/pike/bass: closed Mar 1 – first Sat of May (traditional opener). Muskie: closed until last Sat of May (northern zone) / first Sat of June (southern). Trout streams: closed Oct 16 – early May depending on classification.
Catch limits
Walleye: 3–5/day (zone dependent). Muskie: 1/day 40" min (northern) / 50" min (southern/Ceded Territory). Northern pike: 2–5/day 26" min (varies). Bass: 5/day 14" min.
Prohibited methods
No live minnows during certain spring periods. Spearing legal for non-game fish in winter.
Catch & Release
Muskie effectively catch-and-release (high minimum size). Sturgeon — separate tag system.

Ceded Territory (north/central WI — 1837/1842 Chippewa treaty area) has different muskie minimums. Lake Winnebago is famous for the spring sturgeon spearing season (February, lottery tags).
