Rules & Regulations

Closed seasons
Most species year-round. Paddlefish: late-September to mid-October snagging season below Gavins Point Dam (Missouri River) — lottery only. Walleye/Sauger: 15" min on most waters, 4/day combined. Muskie: 40" min, 1/day.
Catch limits
Largemouth/Smallmouth Bass combined 6/day, 15" min most waters (McConaughy has 18" min). Walleye 4/day, 15" min. White Bass 15/day. Channel Catfish 5/day. Trout 7/day (Sutherland, Lake Ogallala, stocked streams).
Prohibited methods
No snagging except paddlefish season. Bowfishing allowed for non-game fish. Setlines permitted with tags. Max 2 poles unless 3-pole stamp ($14) added.
Catch & Release
Voluntary. Trophy muskie + walleye C&R strongly encouraged. Some put-and-take trout fisheries have no minimum size.

Aquatic Habitat Stamp is mandatory on top of the base permit — funds habitat improvement. Missouri River boundary waters are reciprocal with South Dakota. McConaughy has a separate sportfish survey that drives slot regs.

Waters & Fish Species

Top waters

  • Lake McConaughy (30,500 acres — 'Big Mac'; white bass blitzes, walleye, wipers, alewife-fat rainbows)
  • Missouri River (Gavins Point tailwater — walleye, sauger, paddlefish, trophy flathead)
  • Merritt Reservoir (2,906 acres — Sandhills; muskie, walleye, northern pike)
  • Lake Ogallala (320 acres — cold tailwater of McConaughy, trophy rainbow + brown trout)
  • Harlan County Reservoir (13,250 acres — walleye, wiper, white bass)
Best season
April–June walleye spawn at McConaughy; July white bass blitzes ('boiling' alewife feeds); September–October paddlefish snagging below Gavins Point; ice fishing Dec–Feb on Sandhills lakes.
Freshwater
Dominated by Lake McConaughy (largest, 30,500 acres, Platte River impoundment), Sandhills natural lakes (Merritt region), and Missouri River. High Plains character — windswept, sandy, alkaline prairie lakes with exceptional walleye + white bass forage base driven by alewife + gizzard shad.
Saltwater
Landlocked — no saltwater fishery.

Practical Information

Equipment
Cabela's flagship store in Sidney (home of Cabela's, until Bass Pro acquisition). Scheels in Omaha + Lincoln. Big Mac Outfitters on McConaughy for walleye tackle.
Fishing guides
$400–$650/day walleye + muskie guides on McConaughy + Merritt. $350–$500 paddlefish snagging trips (Missouri River, seasonal). Fly-fishing guides on the North Platte $350–$500.
Transport
Fly into Omaha (OMA) for eastern waters + Missouri River (3–5 hr drives). Denver (DEN) is closer to McConaughy (3.5 hr). North Platte Regional (LBF) serves Big Mac. Rental car essential — western NE is empty.
Safety
Plains thunderstorms and tornadoes April–July. McConaughy gets 3–5 ft chop on 30+ mph days — boat safety critical. Hypothermia risk spring/fall on windy reservoirs. Winter ice on Sandhills lakes — verify 4"+ thickness.
