Idaho is the anchor of the 'Greater Yellowstone' trout + steelhead country. Required for ages 14+. Separate Salmon/Steelhead Permit is MANDATORY for any angler targeting Chinook, coho, or steelhead — fishing these species without the permit is a serious violation. Sturgeon are catch-and-release only statewide.

Rules & Regulations

Closed seasons
Chinook salmon: season varies by year + river — usually May–July (announced annually). Steelhead: Sep 1 – Apr 30 most rivers. Trout: year-round on most waters, seasonal closures on spawning tributaries.
Catch limits
Trout (rainbow/cutthroat/brown/brook): 6/day statewide (regional variations). Steelhead: 3/day with permit (barbless hooks). Chinook salmon: 2/day (adipose-clipped only). Bass (largemouth/smallmouth): 6/day combined. Sturgeon: CATCH-AND-RELEASE ONLY statewide.
Prohibited methods
Barbless hooks mandatory for steelhead + salmon. No bait in designated fly-fishing-only waters (Silver Creek, Henrys Fork Railroad Ranch). Snagging prohibited.
Catch & Release
MANDATORY for all sturgeon (white + green). Required for wild (non-clipped) salmon + steelhead. Cutthroat catch-and-release on many tributaries.

Silver Creek Preserve (Nature Conservancy, Sun Valley) is one of the world's premier spring-creek dry-fly fisheries. Henrys Fork of the Snake (Railroad Ranch stretch) hosts legendary salmonfly + green drake hatches. Snake River white sturgeon grow to 10+ feet — all C&R.

BOI (Boise) main hub. SUN (Hailey, Sun Valley) for Silver Creek. IDA (Idaho Falls) closest to Henrys Fork. Rental car essential — distances huge.
Safety
Grizzly bears in eastern ID — carry spray. Whitewater on Salmon River requires experienced guide for float trips. Altitude 5,000–8,000 ft on most waters. Wildfires Jul–Sep can close backcountry access.
