Mongolia is the last refuge of the Taimen — the largest salmonid in the world (up to 1.5 m!). Fishing is only possible through specialized operators. Catch-and-Release is mandatory for Taimen! The rivers are completely untouched.

Rules & Regulations
- Closed seasons
- Taimen: October to May (spawning and winter protection). Lenok: Partially restricted.
- Catch limits
- Taimen: STRICT Catch-and-Release only! No take-home allowed. Other species: Moderate limits.
- Prohibited methods
- Live bait fish prohibited. Only artificial lures and flies for Taimen.
- Catch & Release
- ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT for Taimen! Barbless Hooks mandatory. Do not lift fish out of the water.
The Taimen is highly endangered. Mongolia protects it strictly. Guides pay meticulous attention to correct handling. Catching a Taimen is a lifetime experience!

Practical Information
- Equipment
- Heavy spinning or fly rods (9-10wt). Bring your own equipment — nothing available locally!
- Fishing guides
- Only through specialized operators. All-Inclusive Camps: 500-1,000 USD/day.
- Transport
- Flight to Ulaanbaatar. Then domestic flight or LONG drive on dirt tracks (8-12 hours!). Horses/Yaks.
- Safety
- Extreme climate! Night frost possible in summer. No medical care. Satellite phone mandatory.
- Customs & taking fish home
- Fishing equipment permitted. Visa on arrival or in advance for many nationalities.
