Through specialized fishing tour operators. Permits are issued by local authorities. — Mongolia is the last refuge of the Taimen — the largest salmonid in the world (up to 1.5 m!). Fishing is only possible through specialized operators. Catch-and-Release is mandatory for Taimen! The rivers are completely untouched.

The Taimen is highly endangered. Mongolia protects it strictly. Guides pay meticulous attention to correct handling. Catching a Taimen is a lifetime experience!

Freshwater

Completely untouched steppe and mountain rivers. Some of the last wilderness waters on earth.

Saltwater

No access to the sea (landlocked).

Equipment

Heavy spinning or fly rods (9-10wt). Bring your own equipment — nothing available locally!

Guides

Only through specialized operators. All-Inclusive Camps: 500-1,000 USD/day.

Getting there

Flight to Ulaanbaatar. Then domestic flight or LONG drive on dirt tracks (8-12 hours!). Horses/Yaks.

Safety

Extreme climate! Night frost possible in summer. No medical care. Satellite phone mandatory.

Customs & fish export
