Through locally authorized expedition providers and specialized guides. — There is no central online portal for sport anglers. Access is obtained via invitations/permits that must be arranged by local partners on site and legitimized by the Ministry of Fisheries.

Rules in detail

The Goliath fish is the crown jewel of the Congo Basin. Fishing usually takes place in extremely remote, pristine river sections far away from the centers.

Freshwater

The vast Congo Basin is one of the last places in the world for genuine wilderness expeditions targeting the Goliath fish.

Saltwater

Very small coastline near Muanda on the Atlantic; hardly developed for sport fishermen so far.

Equipment

Complete own high-performance equipment required (steel leaders, 10-11 rods). Nothing is available for rent on site.

Guides

Mandatory: 500-1,500 USD/day for fully organized, protected expeditions.

Getting there

Arrival via Kinshasa; inland only possible by pirogue, small aircraft or off-road vehicle.

Safety

Highest warning level: Travel only in organized groups with security support; malaria prophylaxis and yellow fever vaccination essential.

Customs & fish export

Visa required in advance; official invitation letters for sport expeditions are obtained through local guides.
