Two parts: practical exam first (~20 min: knots, rod assembly, humane killing on a model; pass with 24/30 points), then theory: 60 questions (6 subjects, pool ~600), up to 90 min, pass with 45/60; compact one-day option; several dates per year
Minimum age
Exam and license from 12; under 12 (and up to under 15) may fish supervised by an adult license holder

Mandatory: 35 hours (up to 15 h theory as self-study/online, at least 15 h classroom + 5 h practical training); pure online courses insufficient

Out-of-state exam certificates only recognized if you did not live in Hamburg at exam time

'Free waters' (harbour, parts of Elbe/Alster) need no water permit; licensed guides may take up to 3 unlicensed guests
