Closed seasons

No uniform closed seasons for sport fishermen. Observe protected areas and species-specific regulations. The first 5 nautical miles are a protected zone.

Catch limits

Moderate limits. Catch-and-Release recommended in the Amazon and for billfish. Quotas for commercial species such as Perico (59,000 t 2024-2025).

Prohibited methods

Dynamite, poison and electrofishing prohibited. Sustainable methods prescribed. No fishing in protected areas without permission.

Catch & release

Increasingly standard in the Amazon region (Peacock Bass, Arapaima). Pacific: Billfish (Marlin, Sailfish) strictly Catch-and-Release.

Peru updated the fisheries law in 2025 (DS N° 006-2025-PRODUCE) — more than 50 regulations revised. Stricter controls and sanctions.

Freshwater

Amazon basin with incredible species diversity. Peacock Bass, Arapaima and catfish in jungle lagoons. Pacaya Samiria National Reserve is a highlight.

Saltwater

Humboldt Current brings nutrients and huge fish shoals. Cabo Blanco and Mancora: World-class marlin fishing. Hemingway history!

Equipment

Charters provide equipment. Amazon lodges: Basic equipment available, own rods recommended. Bring high-quality lures.

Amazon: Yellow fever vaccination recommended, consider malaria prophylaxis. Watch out for caimans, piranhas. Altitude in the Andes for trout fishing! Sun protection essential.
