Catch limits

Prohibited methods
Monofilament nets, explosives and poison are strictly prohibited. Only hook and line allowed.
Catch & release
Standard for sports fishermen in 2026 for Dorado and large catfish. Catch & Release is strongly promoted.

At MADES (Ministerio del Ambiente), regional offices or conveniently online via the SIAM portal. — Paraguay is a top destination for adventurers in 2026. The license requirement is strictly controlled, especially on the main rivers. The SIAM online portal has significantly simplified the process for tourists.
During the closed season (Veda) all sport fishing from boats is prohibited. Only bank fishing for personal consumption is partially permitted.
Dominant through the giant Paraná and Paraguay systems. Countless tributaries in the Chaco and east.
No access to the sea (landlocked country).
Heavy gear for Surubí (80lb+) required. Baitfish (Morenas) are the standard on site.
Professional guides in 2026: approx. 120-250 USD/day incl. boat and fuel. Quality has increased in Ayolas.
4WD rental car recommended for Chaco tours. Charter flights to remote estancias possible.
