Rules & Regulations

Closed seasons
Bluefin tuna: Strict EU quota regulations. Lampuki (Mahi-Mahi): Allowed from August.
Catch limits
Tuna: EU quotas, tag-and-release. Lampuki: Seasonally limited.
Prohibited methods
Nets prohibited near the coast. Spearfishing regulated (only with snorkel).
Catch & Release
Increasingly for tuna (EU quotas). Recreational C&R allowed.

Malta is ideal for big game beginners — deep water is only 15 minutes from the coast! Bluefin tuna and swordfish pass close by.
