GPS privacy

You decide. Per catch. Before and after submitting.

Protecting secret spots is angler culture. Your real GPS pin only leaves the database if YOU release it (spot-share). Publicly, only the blurred point is visible. Default: ±5km blur.

Dual storage

The database stores real and blurred coordinates separately. Only the blurred position is served publicly. Real coordinates are visible only to you, an admin and authorized spot-shares.

Spot-share trust

Magic link to ONE email. Cryptographically secured token, valid 90 days. Revocable anytime, audit log with last-seen. Granular consent per catch.

Profile visibility

Public · catches-only · anonymous. Anonymous mode replaces your name with “Anonymous” everywhere. Takes effect immediately.

Right after submitting we call OpenMeteo (weather + marine) and the solunar computation in parallel — matched to your exact time and spot. Tide is estimated astronomically: ±15min on Atlantic coasts, ±1–2h in the Pacific/Caribbean (clearly disclaimed).

Why the data here is real. Not hype.

Mod queue

Every catch starts in a pending state. A human reviews, approves or rejects (with a reason email). No unreviewed public submits.

Magic-link auth

No passwords. Short-lived email tokens for login and account actions, signed session cookies. Nothing to forget, nothing to leak.

Fake protection

Size/weight only minimally editable after approval (max +10%). Photo, GPS and date are locked once approved — protection against big-fish inflation.

GDPR: pause / anonymize / delete

Pause = catches hidden immediately (reversible). Anonymize = profile strip, stats remain anonymous. Full delete = permanent removal including photos. Confirmation always via magic link.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to submit?
No. An email is enough — you get a magic link to confirm. An account is optional, but worth it for the personal hub, badges and spot-share.
How precisely is my GPS spot shown publicly?
Default: ±5km blur. You choose between 5 levels per catch (exact / ±5km / ±15km / region / country). Real coordinates only leave the database via spot-share.
Who sees my email?
Nobody except you and an admin. Publicly, a display name or an anonymized handle is shown. Your email stays private.
Can I edit a catch afterwards?
Story, size (±10%), weight (±10%), released flag and GPS privacy: yes. Date, GPS coordinates and photo are locked after approval — trust protection.
What happens if I want to be deleted?
Pause (everything hidden, reversible), anonymize (profile strip, catches remain anonymous) or full delete (permanent, including photos). Confirmation always via magic link.
How does the solunar rating work?
Moon phase + sun position + major/minor periods, 1–5 stars. Computed from your exact GPS position and timestamp. The theory isn't science, but it's statistically correlated.
Is tide data accurate everywhere?
Atlantic (Maine, Norway, Cornwall): ±15min. Pacific/Caribbean with mixed tides: ±1–2h — clearly disclaimed in the UI. We use an astronomical estimate, not official tide tables.
Can I export my data?
Yes — GDPR right. A ZIP with JSON of all catches + original photos + audit log. Request it in the /me account, delivered via email link.
Does it work on iPhone?
Yes — installable PWA. Safari → Share → Add to Home Screen. Catches can be viewed offline; only submitting needs a connection.
How much does premium feature XY cost?
There is no premium. We're not a pro-version company. Charter bookings via the country pages refinance the hosting — Catches itself is and stays free.
