Free Solunar Calendar for 208 Countries

When do fish bite best? Not randomly — they follow the moon. Our Solunar calendar computes the optimal fishing times for every country on Earth, for free, in 10 languages, with no app and no signup.

What is Solunar Theory?

In 1926, American angler John Alden Knight published a simple observation: fish activity follows the moon.

The theory identifies four feeding windows per day:

  • Major periods (about 2 hours): When the moon reaches its upper or lower transit — directly overhead or on the exact opposite side of the Earth. Peak tidal forces, peak fish activity.
  • Minor periods (about 1 hour): Moonrise and moonset. Weaker impulses, but often enough for a productive hour on the water.
  • The 1-to-5 star rating combines moon phase (new and full moon = maximum tidal force) with overlap between feeding windows and sunrise or sunset. On days where lunar and solar rhythms align, bite activity spikes dramatically.

    What our calendar shows

Every one of our 208 country pages includes:

7-day calendar — A tab strip for the coming week. Each day shows its star rating at a glance. Tap a day to see sunrise, sunset, moon phase, and exact major and minor period times.

30-day heatmap — A month-long overview as a color-coded grid. Green cells mean excellent conditions, grey means poor. Tap any cell for details. The top-5 days of the month are listed below the grid.

Best-day callout — When a 5-star day is coming up within the next 30 days, the calendar highlights it: date, rating, and how many days away.

Timezone-aware — Sitting in London and planning a fishing trip to Iceland? The calendar automatically shows Icelandic local time, not yours. A small GMT badge marks the difference so you always know what you're looking at.

ICS Export: Fishing Times in Your Pocket

Pick your travel dates (arrival and departure), hit download, and you get an `.ics` file with every major period as a calendar event. Import it into Apple Calendar, Google Calendar or Outlook — done. Each event shows the star rating right in the title.

Planning a 14-day fishing trip to Norway? The export gives you 28 events (2 major periods per day) with exact times in Norwegian local time. Your phone reminds you in the morning: "Major Period · Norway (★★★★★) — 06:12 to 08:12".

    How it works

Everything is computed in your browser. We use the open-source library `suncalc` for sun and moon positions. From that we derive transit times, moon phases, and the Solunar rating. No external APIs, no server costs, no data stored about you.

Coordinates come from our country database (208 entries with latitude and longitude). Timezones are stored per country so the times always appear in the destination's local time — even when you're planning from home.
