Rules & Regulations
- Closed seasons
- Strict closed seasons for the Sevan trout (Ishkhan) as well as seasonal fishing bans for whitefish (summer/autumn 2026).
- Catch limits
- State catch quotas for whitefish (550 tons for 2026). Sevan trout: Strictly protected, C&R or strict fishing ban.
- Prohibited methods
- Nets, electrofishing and illegal fishing gear are strictly prohibited and will be prosecuted.
- Catch & Release
- Mandatory recommendation or requirement for endemic species such as the Sevan trout. Support for stock protection.
The Sevan trout (Salmo ischchan) is endemic and highly endangered. Fishing at Lake Sevan will be closely monitored by the Ministry of Environment in 2026.

- Your own equipment must be brought as local specialty shops for high-quality tackle are rare.
- Fishing guides
- Local guides for Lake Sevan: 50-100 EUR/day. Mountain guides for rivers often bookable individually.
- Transport
- Flight to Yerevan. Rental car (4x4 recommended for high mountain roads). Marshrutkas for individual tourism.
- Safety
- Generally safe. Caution on steep mountain roads. Altitude sickness possible at Sevan. Avoid border zones with Azerbaijan at all costs.
- Customs & taking fish home
- Visa-free for EU citizens (up to 180 days). Fishing equipment can be declared without problems upon entry.
